This paper studies the living styles of 16 families with infants in Korea and Japan. Infants’ space usage patterns in housing are deeply related to floor plan, especially the connection of kitchen, living room and rooms, as well as the number of rooms connected to living room. If these 3 spaces are openly-connected, living room can be used for relaxation and room can be used by infants’ to play or study. It is desirable that the kitchen is designed in a way that parents can watch over the infants and control their access to the kitchen. With these findings, designers and dwellers could improve family living environment for both the adults and infants by proper dwelling space composition.
