This paper examines the philosophical pursuit of two eminent figures of the modern Greek and world culture, who lived, worked and embraced spiritual traditions, different from those they were born in. Demetrios Galanos lived and worked in India. He is the first Greek Indologist, who made the Sanskrit literature and philosophical thought known to the Greek reader.
Lafcadio Hearn, known also by his Japanese name Koizumi Yakumo, spent the last part of his life in Japan. His pioneering books convey the glimpses of an unfamiliar Japan to the western world. Besides, the present study highlights the ways both men followed to overcome the cultural restrictions they experienced in their personal lives, and how those expanded their global understanding and affected their works.
