Although positive effects of exercise on mental health have been introduced to the public, little study has examined those of university students. Thus, the purpose of this study was to examine whether swimming could positively impact on the trait anxiety and the reaction time(simple and choice reaction time; SRT & CRT, respectively) of university students. Thirty participants who were novice in swimming (crawl) trained swimming two times a week, 90 minutes per time for 14 weeks. Before and after the treatment, their trait anxiety and simple and choice reaction time were measured and compared. Results revealed that the participants all passed the performance criterion (25m in crawl), which showed great satisfaction (7.7 out of 10 scale) measured by themselves. In addition, their trait anxiety showed decrease tendency(p=.07) and the same was true in SRT/CRT(ps=.08, .09). These results not only support previous studies in terms of psychological effects of exercise and but also show the possibility to widen the scope of the effects of exercise to the realm of the RT.
