Approximately 87% of the total national energy demand is met through traditional solid biomass in Nepal. In the case of isolated and inaccessible remote areas, 99% of the household energy demand is met through firewood. Nevertheless, use of solid biomass is confronted with series of issues and challenges in terms of occupational and environmental health. Indoor air pollution (IAP) is the main concern in the rural households where unprocessed solid biomass is used for household chores. The impact of IAP is more pronounced on women and children under five years since they spend most of their time in the kitchen. Acute respiratory infections, tuberculosis, asthma, bronchitis, vision problems etc., are some of the major health concerns occurred due to IAP. In recent years, improved cooking stoves have been introduced in the rural household to reduce IAP. Nevertheless, implementation of renewable energy technologies is not satisfactory due to low investment on health sector. Information gap, lack of credit facilities to help households offset initial investment costs and no regular supply of the necessary technology are some of the bottleneck in adoption of anti-pollution interventions in Nepal.
