Undariopsis peteseniana (U. Peteseniana), brown algae, is uniquely distributed in Jeju island of South Korea and generates abundant natural products, including antioxidant or anti-inflammatory properties. Cigarette smoke contains numerous oxidants and genotoxins that cause DNA damage and cytotoxicity both in vitro and in vivo. We hypothesize that apo-9’-fucoxanthinone (Apo9F) isolated from Undariopsis peteseniana protects against cigarette smoke-induced DNA damage and cytotoxicity. The Apo9F which is isolated from brown alga, Undariopsis peteseniana, suppresses DNA damage by augmenting DNA repair. We found that Apo9F protects against genotoxin (e.g. cigarette smoke [CS])-induced cytotoxicity in human bronchial epithelial cells (HBEC2).
