초록· 키워드

Learner corpus research has shown that argumentative essays by L2 English writers tend to adopt more involved and overstating tones than those of native writers. This tendency has been attributed to the use of linguistic features typically associated with conversational registers. This study investigated the extent of this phenomenon in argumentative essays written by Korean EFL learners. Specifically, the study examined a corpus of Korean university students’ English argumentative essays for a set of linguistic features that are typical of conversational discourse and academic prose and compared the frequency counts of each feature with those from a corpus of native speaker essays. Results showed that the Korean university students significantly overused both involvement (e.g., first-person pronouns, private verbs) and overstatement (e.g., amplifiers, emphatics) features while underusing features of academic prose (e.g., downtoners, academic hedges). The findings suggest that Korean EFL writers should be provided with gradual guidance to improve their register awareness and to acquire stylistic competence in varying their linguistic repertoires appropriately depending on the situation of language use.
