초록·키워드
The purpose of this study was to develop ornaments for the Hanbok (a traditional Korean garment) that use the aesthetic characteristics of knots used to decorate musical instruments in the early Joseon Dynasty, despite there being little data on the design of these knots, through a graphical analysis of customary formalities in 『Sejong Chronicle』, a cultural archive. As a research methodology, this study pursued a theoretical consideration based on a survey of the literature and material data investigation and analysis of knot ornaments shown in customary formalities in “Sejong Chronicle” before manufacturing ornaments for Hanbok. Through a graphical analysis, it was found that there was a blank space between knots despite the possibility of simple expression with graphics, in musical instruments. In the existing Norigae, knots were used just as auxiliary decoration, because knots were long and rich in fringe ornaments and colorful jewelry with similar forms to those in the late Joseon Dynasty. In the ornaments of musical instruments recorded in 『Sejong Chronicle』, knots are used as major expressive elements for decoration, because they mainly consisted of knots without colorful jewelry. Also, the shape of ornaments is very short and simple compared to the current Norigae. Through applying such characteristics of ornaments on music instruments to the development of ornaments for Hanbok, it was found that knots were embossed and fringes were very plain.
