This study aims at finding out in a experimental phonetic way the reason for word-initial tensitfication when Koreans speakers produce English loanwords. This study mainly suggested the following interesting findings: First, Korean speakers do not recognize stressed syllable intensity and vowel duration as well as American speakers. Second, the vowel duration of Korean stops is similar to that of English stops produced by Korean speakers. Third, as for F0, it is higher in Gyonsang Korean speakers than in American speakers. In Korean speakers, intensity and F0 serve as an important cue in distinguishing Korean stops and English stops. Regarding American speakers, intensity and vowel duration serve as a clue to distinguish between voiced and voiceless stops. A word-initial tensitfication which occurred in pronouncing English voiced stops produced by Korean speakers appears to result from strengthening intensity and F0.
