    This paper presents an analysis of the realization of specificity in scrambling. In this paper, I explore the relationship between contrastive focus and scrambling within the pragmatic approach. Regarding this relationship, I provide a brief review of previous approaches to scrambling and point out some related empirical and conceptual problems. In previous approaches, scrambling depended on the “definiteness” of the lexical feature, which means a [+definite] feature in the syntactic structure. However, some empirical evidence in Korean and German demonstrates that nominal expressions with specific features remain in the original position. I propose an alternative approach to scrambling to resolve these problems. Scrambling is closely related with the “focus or contrastive focus” element, which involves semantic, phonetic, and pragmatic factors in the arrangement of words. For this reason, it is deeply connected with discourse linking.
