This study discusses the sources of Pecola Breedlove’s schizophrenia and disillusion in The Bluest Eye. Pecola is taunted by her neighborhood children, and brutalized by the whites’ and mullatos’ exclusive racism. Worse yet, she is not cared for by her parents. Her mother prefers the white daughter of an employer. Her father rapes her. Suffering from the maltreatment from both the social and familial worlds, she can’t find out the alternative space to protect herself from racial atrocities and disrupted family relations. Therefore, she has to create a severely circumscribed vision of herself that fluctuates compulsively between the painful images of her traumatic experiences and the imagined attainment of her desire for the white standard of blue eyes. She surrenders her potential selfhood to the whites’ cultural definitions of beauty and worthiness, which leads her to lose herself. The overriding norms of racism make her withdraw completely from reality, while driving her into schizophrenia and disillusion.
