Kang So-cheon was active with his literary works from the 1930s to the 1960s. The fairy tales he published pursued subversive modern literature through the fantasy technique or inherited the spirit of traditional narrative by accepting the elements of traditional fairy tales. He has been so far evaluated as an author that tried to heal the scars of the Korean War with the “technique of dreams,” which has restricted the world of his works to the thematic dimension in assessment and resulted in prejudices about him and his works. It is because the dogmatic tendency was dominant in children’s literature.
This study set out to escape from the old fixed interpretations of his fairy tales. He published a lot of fairy tales containing the elements of traditional fairy tales, starting with 「Three Rabbit Brothers」(1952). Those works were created by ccepting or transforming the traditional narratives. JinDallae and Cheoljjuk(1953), a long fairy tale of his that the present study focused on, however, shows different aesthetics from his other works embracing the elements of traditional fairy tales. In his meta-text JinDallae and Cheoljjuk, he mimicked old novels ‘Shimcheongjeon’ and ‘Heungbujeon’ as the primary texts and reinforced his theme by copying a variety of motifs. Its aesthetics can be explained as hybrid imitation by pastiche or intertextuality.
In South Korea, (children’s) literature was placed under the influence of postmodernism in the 1990s. Considering the period when he was active and the time when JinDallae and Cheoljjuk was published, his aesthetic consciousness or his technique-based formal aesthetics was pioneering. The study will offer grounds to interpret his literary world anew by graduating from the old single evaluation of healing and overcoming through the fantasy technique at the thematic level.
