This study aims to distinguish between safe(ty) and secur(-ity) using corpus-based collocation and ‘Binary Opposition(BO) Strategy’ proposed by Kim(2015). His BO-Strategy was invented for the effective distinction between a pair of lexical/grammatical (near-) synonyms on the basis of the Structuralist concept of binary opposition, defined as the system by which the theoretical opposites are strictly defined and set off against one another. This study demonstrates that safe(ty) and secur(-ity) are distinguished in the context by opposite features, such as [Causative vs. Non-causative], [Harm vs. Victim], [Result vs. Process], and [Direct vs. Indirect], depending on the difference between being safe and making safe, the difference in statuses of frame elements between collocates of safe(ty) and secur (-ity), the difference of putting the focus of safety on either its result or process, and the difference of actions taken in dealing with harm as one of the frame elements, respectively.
