The present study investigates the orientational metaphors in the Gospel of Matthew and finds out what their characteristics are in terms of the cognitive linguistic approach. 132 metaphorical linguistic expressions based on orientation are found in the Gospel of Matthew: 77 expressions are classified as vertical orientation, and 55 expressions as horizontal orientation; there exist 20 types of orientational metaphors in total. The study suggests that the people, including St. Matthew, in those days actually had spatial metaphorical thinking just as modern people have; the way of conceptualizing in different time and culture seems to be similar or the same in some aspects depending on our viewpoint. The study also shows that Christians think about life and place in their cognition in a different way.
