Using the translated text of The Vegetarian from a Korean novel, the paper studies the impact of the explicitation strategy on forming an equivalence between Korean SLT and English TLT. First, the paper explains why the explicitation strategy is necessary to bridge the cultural gap that exists between high-context SLT and low-context TLT. Then, it examines the relevance and drawbacks of this strategy by mandatory, selective and pragmatic uses, bringing up the text reliability issues of establishing the equivalence. After that, based on Nunan’s (2004) text evaluation model, the author conducts a text analysis using data extracted from The Vegetarian, examining the positive and negative effects of this strategy in forming the equivalence. The text analysis results find that the STL’s contextual ambiguity was effectively recreated into the TLT’s expressive fictional reality, resulting in positive discourse receptions from low-context target readership. In contrast, the explicitation is also found to modify or distort STL content when the translator transfers the SLT’s implicit context into excessively explicit expressions.
