Based on JFH’s (1952) acoustic definition of [grave] and also Hyman’s (1975) scrutinized analysis of the feature, this paper explores how [grave], one of their twelve acoustic features can contribute to a convincing explanation about the English binominals. In so doing, it is pointed out that the feature should be interpreted and/or understood as a multivalued property as opposed to a Chomsky & Halle’s (1968) binary system, giving rise to a gravity hierarchy based on the aerodynamics of formants acoustically allotted to vowels. Established as a phonological structure of English binominals, the left-branching hierarchical structure of [[[A] [and]] [B]] goes with the tendency that the vowel in A is characterized as a relatively less degree of gravity whereas that in B as a relatively more degree of gravity. Hence ‘cats and dogs’ is acceptable as a good example of English binominals, but such is not the case with ‘dogs and cats.’
