초록·키워드
This research proposes a scale to measure basic human senses in leisure tourism and consists of two studies: first, sense-related item generation by a qualitative approach; and second, validation of the scale by statistical tools. In the first study, measurement items for sense scale were generated from the literature review and in-depth interviews with a semi-structured guideline. Interview participants were international tourists who had visited Vietnam within the previous year as of the interview who were chosen by convenience sampling method. As a result, nineteen initial sense-related items were generalized and categorized into five themes consisting of sight, touch, sound, smell, and taste. Sight was measured by natural landscape, local appearances, costumes, and on-site architecture. Touch was perceived through temperature, touch of natural resources, and spa services. Meanwhile, sound was expressed by noise/silence, local voices and accents, Vietnamese music, and the sound of traffic. On the other hand, smell was recognized through local foods, drinks, flowers, and local fruits and vegetables. Taste was determined by local food, drinks, fruits, and the uniqueness of local foods. In the second study, an analysis of data collected from a survey in Vietnam among travelers from various countries confirmed the reliability and validity of the sense scale through second-order confirmatory factor analysis of senses and structural relationship between senses and emotions, one of the key variables related to senses. This study confirms that sensory inputs have a positive effect on tourists’ emotions.
