Check patterns are one of the most favorite patterns designers love to incorporate into their annual collections. In particular, Vivienne Westwood is one who applied a variety of check patterns to her work. This article comparatively analyzes the formal characteristics of the check patterns Westwood utilized in her clothing collection and examines the fashion image that her check patterns represent. H-line and A-line silhouettes are predominant in Westwood’s check pattern collection to emphasize the check patterns and their planar characteristics. Two to three-degree color numbers are most frequently used and wool is utilized as the primary fabric. Based on these study results, the fashion image that Westwood’s collection represents is as follows. First, it expresses a neat yet luxurious and elegant feel by using wool as its primary material. It also carries a classic feel through its use of 2 to 3-degree plain color combinations. Second, Westwood’s check pattern collection has a touch of rhythmicity in its use of a multitudinous color scheme as well as different shapes of check patterns, while also feeling casual with its characteristically active image. Third, her collection is characterized as experimental in its application of different shapes of checks onto different fabrics, and avant-garde regarding its employing multiple colors and contrast combinations. Last, Westwood’s check pattern collection expresses traditional and indigenous ethnicity by incorporating various designs of folk costumes from around the world.
