초록·키워드
The purpose of this paper is to examine the signs used on Susan Glaspell’s Trifles and to analyze them from the semiotical perspective in order to comprehend the drama’s feminist ideology. To do so, the signs, the main components of the drama, are classified as characters, stage space, and objects. First, when characters are analyzed by employing the agent model(modèle actantiel), it is revealed that the characters function as signs that enable its readers or audiences to figure out the structure of power, as indicated by conflicts between the characters. Second, the analysis of stage space shows that space operates as meaningful signs, delivering not only superficial meaning(denotation) but also abstract symbolic meaning(connotation). Finally, it turns out that the objects appearing on the stage convey referential or symbolic meaning in different ways, depending on social-cultural context, rather than that of simple instrumental function. By applying semiotical analyses to Trifles, it becomes apparent that almost all signs in the drama are closely connected, giving rise to signification, which supports the voice of the playwright.
