This study investigated the use of adverbial connectors in Korean college students’ English persuasive essays, compared with that of native speakers. This study also covered comparing the use of adverbial connectors of the current study and that of other studies with different EFL backgrounds. The selection of adverbial connectors used for data analysis was based on 95 connectors from Quirk, Greenbaum, Leech and Svartvik (1985). The study adopted two corpora, KELC (The Korean English Learner Corpus) and LOCNESS (The Louvan Corpus of Native Speaker). Korean learners used 69 types of connectors, whereas native speakers used 80 types of connectors in their essays. However, Korean learners used twice as many adverbial connectors as native speakers. Korean learners excessively overused adverbial connectors such as second, so, and third, but they underused also, then, however, and now. Finally, they used the initial position of the sentences the most, while their native counterparts dominantly used the medial parts of the sentences. Regarding comparing the results with other EFL studies, however, therefore, and for example were common adverbial connectors among all comparing EFL studies. When comparing the top 10 frequent adverbial connectors of the current study, studies from Asian countries had more common adverbial connectors than Western country. Most comparing EFL studies indicated that the sentence initial location of adverbial connectors was more common than the sentence medial whether the writers were EFL learners or native speakers.
