The purpose of this study is to analyze the inhuman social conditions and human relationship expressed in Hard times, and to examine the consciousness of Charles Dickens, who presented a human society. For this purpose, first, I will examine Dickens"s critical view of the 19th century British society and the educational view-point that Dickens draws in Hard Times. Through the contradiction of utilitarian education system, I will tell the education that has a great influence on human values will not correct the social distortion. So I"ll look upon utilitarian education as a form of collusion with the negative value of industrial society. Second, I will consider Coketown, a virtual industrial city that has emerged as a typical model of industrialization and capitalism, as an inhuman place that forces only wealth accumulation and promotion-oriented value. Third, I will show that the world of Sleary is a place where humanity lives. It is a space of humanity where the values of life, far from selfishness, alienation or mechanical standardization, are still alive.
