Min Jin Lee’s Pachinko has been very famous for a catchphrase: History has failed us, but no matter. Pachinko is an epic about the diaspora of Korean-Japanese people called Zainichi which means a foreign citizen ‘staying in Japan.’ The Diaspora story of Korean-Japaneses, written in English by a Korean-American writer, is a rare work that refuses to belong to any category such as Korean literature, Korean-Japanese literature and Korean-American literature, and crosses the boundary. First, this study aims to analyze the alienation and identity issues of Zainichi who lives as a marginal man and eternal stranger without belonging to either Japan, South Korea, or North Korea. Through this analysis process, I would like to affirm Zainichi"s borderline identity and explore new possibilities for living a self-creative life, not an identity cast by racism. Second, by expanding the scope of exploration, I will look into the meaning of crossing the boundaries implied by Pachinko itself and examine the role of diaspora literature in the transnational era that transcends national, ethnic, and cultural boundaries. This paper aims to ethical coexistence of reflecting on discrimination and exclusion in a multicultural society and empathizing with minorities and minority cultures.
