Modern Sino-Korean is the result of both internal and external influences in the Korean phonological system after the introduction of Chinese sounds into Korea in ancient times. Therefore, the effects of changes in the phonological systems of both Chinese and Korean coexist in modern Sino-Korean. This thesis meticulously examines the system of Initials found in the “1,800 Basic Chinese characters for Chinese classics Education” to make a clear interpretation of these effects. The modern Sino-Korean have caused some confusion in reflecting the aspirated or unaspirated sounds of Middle Chinese. It caused by the fact that Korean and Chinese do not have the same phonological system, not because Korean has no aspirated sounds. And all of the Chinese labiodental sounds showed a correspondence with the unaspirated Initials of Korean, which confirms the difference between the way modern Sino-Korean reflect labial and labiodental sounds of Middle Chinese. In addition to this, there were some special cases of reflecting velar and glottal sounds of Middle Chinese, but these were found to be occasional exceptions. Furthermore, this thesis found that the palatalization of Sino-Korean was influenced by changes in the Chinese phonological system in terms of timing, but followed the unique characteristics of the Korean phonological system in terms of method.
