This study investigated the mediating role of grit in the relationship between positive psychological capital and basic psychological needs among 397 elite soccer players from eight universities in Jeonbuk and Gwangju. The findings revealed that positive psychological capital positively influences basic psychological needs and grit, while basic psychological needs also positively affect grit. Additionally, grit was found to mediate the relationship between positive psychological capital and basic psychological needs. These results suggest that positive psychological capital and basic psychological needs interact through grit to enhance players' performance, development, and mental resilience. As positive psychological capital increases, so does grit, aiding athletes in pursuing long-term goals and overcoming challenges. Furthermore, when basic psychological needs like autonomy, competence, and relatedness are met, grit is further strengthened, contributing to improved athletic performance and continuous growth. In summary, the study highlights the importance of strategically fostering grit as a key factor in the development and success of elite athletes.
