Purpose: The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of narcissism and self-efficacy on competitive anxiety among college athletes.
Method: A total of 259 college athletes were selected for the study. The collected data were analyzed using frequency analysis, exploratory factor analysis, reliability analysis, descriptive statistics, correlation analysis, and hierarchical regression analysis, all conducted with SPSS version 26.0. The significance level for the hypothesis tests was set at α=.05.
Results: The results of the analysis are as follows. First, in stage 1 of the hierarchical regression analysis, narcissism was found to significantly increase cognitive anxiety. In stage 2, both narcissism, self-regulatory efficacy, and task difficulty were identified as having significant effects on cognitive anxiety. Second, in stage 1 of the hierarchical regression analysis, narcissism was also found to significantly increase somatic anxiety. In stage 2, task difficulty was determined to have a significant effect on somatic anxiety.
Conclusion: This study suggests that controlling athletes’ narcissism and enhancing their self-efficacy are necessary for regulating competitive anxiety.
