This paper examines the themes of identity formation and belonging in the film The Namesake, which depicts the complex journey of Indian immigrants and their descendants as they navigate cultural displacement and identity reconstruction. Set within the narrative of Indian immigrants navigating life in the United States, it highlights the dual struggle to maintain cultural heritage and adapt to a new societal context. Using the concepts of hybridity, diaspora, and cultural identity, this study explores the protagonist Gogol’s struggles to reconcile his inherited Indian cultural values with the American social norms he encounters. Gogol’s journey is marked by significant tensions between his parents’ deep attachment to Indian traditions and his own desire to embrace an American lifestyle. His parents, Ashoke and Ashima, exemplify the first-generation immigrant experience, as they balance their deeply rooted Indian identities with the challenges of settling into an unfamiliar environment. The study highlights how these cultural and generational conflicts mirror broader issues of immigrant identity and intergenerational misunderstandings. Through symbolic elements such as names, rituals, and interpersonal dynamics, the film illustrates the fluidity and complexity of hybrid identities that arise in immigrant families. Gogol’s transition from rejecting his heritage to rediscovering its significance underscores the resilience and adaptability inherent in diasporic identities. The paper also discusses the role of names and traditions in shaping self-perception and cultural affiliation, particularly within the context of intergenerational relationships. By analyzing The Namesake through the lens of identity formation and belonging, this study contributes to a deeper understanding of the immigrant experience, specifically within the Indian diaspora. It emphasizes the transformative potential of cultural hybridity while addressing the enduring struggles of navigating dual identities in a multicultural society.
