Martial law in Taiwan, which lasted approximately 38 years from 1949 to 1987, stands as one of the longest instances in East Asian history. This study analyzes the background, prolonged implementation, and socio-political impacts of Taiwan’s martial law. It highlights how the Kuomintang (KMT) regime utilized martial law to reinforce authoritarian governance and politically exploit judicial authority through military tribunals. Beginning with the February 28 Incident, martial law was ostensibly implemented to address national emergencies but effectively served as a tool for regime preservation and social control. This research underscores Taiwan’s martial law as a critical case for understanding authoritarian politics and democratization in East Asia, examining the historical scars and ongoing societal implications it left behind.
