This article is about the practical case of creating women’s cultural memory spaces that reproduce women’s lives in regional spaces as public history by “History Factory (HISTOFACTO)/Public History& Cultural Studies Lab”. This work was carried out in 2024 with the Gyeonggi-Do Women’s Vision Center and the Suwon Studies Center. Gyeonggi Women’s Vision Center and the Suwon Studies Center. As a result of the work, women’s history and culture contents called “Sanruri Road(산루리 길)” and “Suryehan Road(수려한 길)” were developed. “Sanruri Road” reproducing the history of women students, who are symbols of modern women in the Suwon region, and “Suryehan Road” reproducing the life history of ordinary women in Suwon in the 20th century. It is the result of the work of creating a cultural memory space that explores public communication by revealing and reproducing women who pioneered life along with the changing times in the local space of Suwon.
In these works, women’s history was interpreted as a whole story of history, and the history of human women who lived under various restrictions during the transition period was reproducing stories that understand the human form as it is and increase gender sensitivity. Storytelling was done by extracting and reconstructing historical elements that reflect the special characteristics of local spaces. In order for ‘roads’ to become cultural memory spaces and regional cultural assets, the role of local governments that operate ‘roads’ is just as important as the role of researchers who created historical and cultural content. It is also necessary to operate a women’s public history governance to create a historical culture that respects gender equality and humanity, and to expand women’s cultural policies and history education.
