As diversity driven by multiculturalism has become an essential demand, DE&I is now a crucial factor in global corporations’ sustainability. In the fashion industry, gender-related issues such as sexism and sexual violence have sparked critical public discourse, engendering broader discussions on DE&I. This study employs critical discourse analysis to examine gender discourse in the fashion industry, focusing on articles in The New York Times. The findings reveal that DE&I discourse in the fashion industry is predominantly shaped by feminist perspectives, with a strong focus on women, whereas discussions on non-binary and LGBTQ+ issues remain superficial. In addition, this study examines Victoria’s Secret as a case study, highlighting how critical discourse led to social actions such as rebranding and DE&I policy shifts. However, radical DE&I strategies that overlooked broader societal acceptance proved ineffective. At present, DE&I faces various challenges amid shifting political landscapes. Nevertheless, for the fashion industry to strategically navigate social and market dynamics, DE&I remains vital. This research contributes to the understanding of how media-driven discourse translates into social action, although its scope is limited to The New York Times. Future research should explore interactive discourse across diverse media platforms, particularly social media.
