Ammonia is increasingly recognized as an effective hydrogen carrier, leading the South Korean government to plan the construction of a large-scale ammonia bunkering terminal at Dangjin Port by 2030. However, due to its toxic and flammable nature, ammonia poses significant safety risks when stored and handled in large quantities, necessitating a precise quantitative risk assessment. This study examines a scenario in which ammonia is released through a pressure safety valve (PSV) due to overpressure caused by a refrigeration system failure in a 40,000-ton storage tank. The dispersion behavior of ammonia was quantitatively analyzed at four concentration levels odor threshold (1 ppm), ERPG-1 (25 ppm), ERPG-2 (150 ppm), and ERPG-3 (1500 ppm) using the BARAM 25.1.0 CFD program based on OpenFOAM. The simulation results showed that during the initial release, ammonia primarily dispersed horizontally and upward under the influence of wind and buoyancy. At the odor threshold level, the gas gradually descended toward the ground over time, whereas at higher ERPG concentrations, it dissipated rapidly and did not reach ground level. These findings suggest that long-term exposure to low concentrations may pose greater health risks to nearby residents than short-term exposure to high concentrations. This study is expected to serve as a valuable reference not only for safety management and emergency evacuation planning at ammonia storage facilities, but also for understanding the quantitative dispersion behavior of ammonia at different concentration levels.
