A depth of interaction (DOI) detector was developed by configuring a scintillator block in two layers and inserting a light guide between these layers. The light guide has a specific pattern to ensure that the distribution of light generated from the scintillation pixels in the top and bottom layers is different. The DOI was evaluated by acquiring a flood image using an electromagnetic radiation source. This experiment confirmed that all the scintillation pixels were separately imaged in the acquired flood image. The scintillation pixels in the top layer were imaged more closely according to the pattern of the light guide than the scintillation pixels in the bottom layer. This enabled the depth of interaction to be determined by distinguishing between light from the top and bottom layers. The use of this detector is expected to improve the spatial resolution of images for small animal positron emission tomography (PET).
