This paper seeks to explore the algorithmic system in the Black Mirror episode Hang the DJ through the lens of posthuman media ecology against the prevalent anxiety over the algorithmic power that regulates human agency. Drawing on Levi Bryant’s conceptualization of machine-oriented ontology and posthuman media ecology, this paper reads the dating application — “the System” — in the episode as a prominent medium that simultaneously affords and constrains human relationships. By offering Frank and Amy affordances and constraints, this algorithmic system orchesrates intimacy between them, even reducing the affective register of love to a calculable variable. The structure of double reversal that features Frank and Amy’s attempt to break free from the System and again reinscribes this subversive gesture within the simulation system ultimately exposes the anthropocentrism behind the romanticized opposition between humans and machines. While falling short of autonomous agency, Frank and Amy’s love or act of resistance emerge as effects within the algorithmic system as an assemblage of machines in which humans, algorithms, social norms, and spatial environments are coupled and interact with each other, destabilizing the boundaries between emotion and data, chance and calculation, and human choice and algorithmic decision. Dismantling the subject–object dichotomy and restoring the ontological entanglement in which humans and machines act as media for one another, the algorithmic system in Hang the DJ can be redefined as a field that generates new relations and affects. In this entangled assemblage, intimacy itself is not solely a product of regulation but persists as a local manifestation of new possibilities.
