Climate change is accelerating, increasing the vulnerability of coastal areas to natural hazards such as typhoons, storm surges, and floods and resulting in greater losses of life and property. Addressing these challenges requires reliable climate crisis adaptation information. The Korea Hydrographic and Oceanographic Agency (KHOA) has operated a coastal disaster risk assessment system based on historical data and is now developing a forward-looking framework that integrates climate change scenarios, particularly SSP5-8.5. This study reviews domestic and international cases of risk assessment under climate change, focusing on the production of adaptation information, applied methodologies, and strategies for practical use. Recent trends show a shift from hazard-centered assessments (e.g., rainfall, strong winds, waves, storm surges, and sea level rise) toward more integrated evaluations that consider exposure and vulnerability. This reflects a growing recognition that risk assessment must move beyond single forcing factors to include socio-economic dimensions. Building on these directions, the study applied future-oriented coastal disaster risk assessment to the entire coastline of South Korea. The results categorized projections into the three periods of near future (2021 - 2040), mid future (2041 - 2060), and far future (2081 - 2100) to reduce uncertainties and enhance practical utility. Practical approaches for utilizing adaptation information derived from the assessment were presented and evaluated, confirming their potential applicability. The findings suggest that improving coastal disaster risk assessment systems can strengthen governmental and municipal decision-making, enhance disaster risk reduction, and support the development of effective climate adaptation policies. These results can serve as foundational information for planning and policy formulation to better protect coastal areas in response to future climate change.
