Purpose: This study aims to examine the differences in dance performance anxiety and psychological resilience according to MBTI personality types among dance majors at various educational levels.
Method: A total of 188 dance majors, including high school, undergraduate, and graduate students, participated in the study. Participants completed self-report measures assessing their MBTI personality type, dance performance anxiety, and resilience (KRQ-53). Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, independent samples t-tests, one-way ANOVA with Bonferroni post-hoc tests, Pearson’s correlation, and multiple regression analyses. The significance level was set at α=.05.
Results: Extraverted (E) individuals reported significantly higher levels of dance performance anxiety compared to introverted (I) individuals ( p<.001), but they also showed significantly greater psychological resilience ( p=.008). Judging (J) types demonstrated higher resilience scores than perceiving (P) types ( p<.001), while no significant differences were found for the sensing–intuitive or thinking–feeling dimensions. Among the MBTI types, ENFJ individuals had the highest anxiety scores, whereas ESTJ individuals had the highest resilience levels.
Conclusion: The findings suggest that although extraverts may experience greater performance-related anxiety due to increased sensitivity to external evaluations, they also possess stronger coping mechanisms and social adaptability, contributing to their resilience. Additionally, the organized and goal-oriented characteristics of the judging personality type may enhance psychological resilience. These results highlight the importance of personality-informed psychological support strategies for managing performance anxiety and promoting resilience in dance education and performance.
