초록·키워드
Due to its insular geography, Jeju Island developed distinctive forms of clothing adapted to its environment. In particular, herders who lived in the mid-mountain regions crafted garments from animal fur and leather—such as leather coats, socks, shoes, and Balrae—to endure harsh weather conditions. This study focuses on Balrae, a type of protective leather legwear, by examining existing artifacts of Jeju’s traditional leather Balrae. Drawing upon prior research that suggests connections to Mongolian pastoral culture introduced during the Goryeo dynasty, the study also compares Balrae with the Chinese tuguo, a form of leather over-trousers, in order to trace possible origins. Balrae was traditionally worn from the Joseon period onward, covering the leg from the ankle to the knee or thigh, serving both to protect trousers and to prevent legs from getting wet or injured during herding activities. At present, only two Balrae artifacts are preserved in the Jeju National University Museum, and they are considered the only surviving examples in Korea. Through empirical analysis, the study investigates their form, materials, characteristics, and construction methods, followed by attempts at 3D reconstruction and virtual dressing on digital avatars. The findings provide valuable historical and academic insights into Jeju’s traditional leather Balrae, contributing to cultural preservation. Furthermore, the application of 3D digital technology establishes a practical foundation for restoring traditional clothing and offers an effective method for sustaining and transmitting Korea’s sartorial heritage.
