Ketoacidosis occurs when the body is producing large quantities of ketone bodies via the metabolism of fatty acids(ketosis) as a result of alcoholism (alcoholic ketoacidsis, AKA) or diabetes (diabetic ketoacidosis, DKA). The common ketones produced in humans are acetone, acetoacetate and β-hydroxybutylate(BHB). We analyzed the acetone and BHB as ketone bodies in postmortem blood of 31 the fatal cases and 16 normal blood in order to diagnose an alcoholic and diabetic ketoacidosis. Acetone and BHB should be considered disease indicators for the postmortem determination of alcoholic ketoacidosis or diabetic ketoacidosis as the cause of death.
