This paper explores social perceptions of sexual violence against women committed during the ethnic conflicts in Kenya in the 1990s. The study focused on the Transamara-Gucha border conflicts between the Maasai and the Gusii ethnic communities and employs in-depth interviews with participants from the Gusii ethnic community to examine why Gusii women rarely reported sexual violence committed against them during the conflict era. It also investigates how men’s and society’s perception of sexual violence contributed to this silence. The study found that specific socio-cultural norms and rituals of cleansing among the Gusii people prohibited women from disclosing any sexual violence against them. The ritual of cleansing, paradoxically, stigmatized the victims and their families, and placed women in a more vulnerable position to be rejected by their spouses.
