It is argued that the emphatic reduplication of Cheju Korean is a case of cooperation of the universal grammar of perception and localized grammar of production. While the general shape of emphatic form is made through maximizing the perceptual distance, the specific arrangement of the perceptual principles is controlled by phonotactic grammar systems which are realized as geminnation, tensification, and aspiration in consonants. In this process, perceptual OCP plays the main role to lead the sound change in emphatic reduplication., in which the contrast of duration and pitch within a base occurs, while the grammar of production triggers gemination, tensification and aspiration. This process of negotiation comes from non-morphological motivation in creating the emphatic form.
