This study analyzes the title of Taewang, which was used to refer to the kings of Goguryeo. Previous studies on the title of Taewang have used the limited historical materials available to focus on this issue from the standpoint of international relations or of the related institutional system. This paper, however, strives to analyze the title of Taewang from the standpoint of the changes that occurred in the perceptions of the royal lineage. Moreover an attempt is made to develop a wider understanding of the range of the title of Taewang through an interpretation of related historical materials. By carrying out the above-mentioned steps, the writer has been able to ascertain the following facts:
The title of Taewang was used from the reign of Gogungnyangwang(故國壤王) until the end of the 6th century. The term Taewang is used to refer to a being much more superior than the 'king of kings' identified in previous studies. The background to the appearance of the term Taewang is consistent with the sixteen kingdoms period in which the local power clans, who all advocated the Cheon(天) belief, created the title of Tian-Wang(天王). Goguryeo kings, borrowing from the lore of Buyeo, established the concept of blood ties based on this notion of Cheon. In addition, the title of Taewang was used only for some time after the demise of Gogukwonwang(故國原王). This seems to indicate that the royal family of Goguryeo traces its origins back to Micheonwang(美川王). Thus, at this point, the notion of the Taewang lineage was formed as a means of differentiating this particular royal family from previous ones. The efforts to create a Taewang lineage led to the subsequent creation of a new method of composing epics, one that used letters. Goguryeo tried to promote the power of the nation and of the royal family by making their people read these epic poems.
