    Recently, virtual machine monitor (VMM) is widely used to gain server consolidation, system reliability and flexibility of applications. However, existing VMM does not fully support a scalable multi-core SMP system in which multiple multi-core packages are installed, since current VMM? implemented without understanding characteristics of the scalable multi-core systems. The characteristics of scalable multi-core system include topologies of last level caches and power management functionality of cores.
    In this paper, we propose a new credit based VM scheduler which exploits the characteristics of the scalable multi-core system for optimal performance. Firstly, we revise VCPU scheduling mechanism in order to reflect last level cache topologies. Secondly, we enhance fair scheduling algorithm to reward the credit of virtual CPUs executing on lower frequency cores.
    We are implementing a new VM scheduler in recent version of Xen VMM on a dual-package SMP system with each package having four cores. This study can provide a VM scheduler which targets best performance in scalable multi-core environment without degrading the fairness.
