Diverse and abundant conodonts have been recovered from the Hwajeol Formation in the southern limb of the Baegunsan Syncline, located between eastern Yeongweol and Samcheog areas, Kangweon-Do. The Hwajeol Formation is divided into two informal units, namely the lower and the upper Hwajeol members herein. The lower Hwajeol member is barren or conodonts, while the upper Hwajeol member yielded 5820 identifiable conodonts and some specimens of Phosphannulus universalis form 237 samples of 18 measured sections or localities. They are classified into 20 multielement species referable to 11 genera and 23 form species belonging to 12 genera, of which five species are new; Hirsutodontus hwajeolensis n. sp. s. f., H. n. sp. A s. f., H. n. sp. B s. f., Proscandodus dissimilaris n. sp. s. f. and Rotundoconus bulbousus n. sp. Based on the conodont species recovered, four local biostratigraphic zones are recognized, namely the Procondontus Zone, Eoconodontus(E.) notchpeakensis Zone, Cambrooistodus minutus Zone and Cordylodus proavus Zone in ascending order. These zones are correlated with those of the Upper Cambrian in northern China, Iran and North America respectively. The Cambrian-Ordovician boundary in this area appeared to be lie within the uppermost part of the formation but it requires more refined study based on abundant conodonts for exact position of the boundary.
