Many studies on safety issues of human-machine interaction are conducted recently, especially taking emergency situations into consideration. In light of this view, the importance of objective and reliable measurement of users’ reactions under emergency situations is becoming more important than ever in reflecting such issues in the design of everyday things. However, despite the need to consider the humanmachine interactions and human performances at the design stage, many products are not designed to incorporate human performances under emergency situations. This study proposes a design method to include such human factors under emergency situations during human-machine interactions. This is achieved through an experiment where operators are instructed to perform a task under a certain emergency situation, and by analyzing the results in a human factors perspective the behavioral pattern of the operators is explained. Finally the method is applied to an industrial application to derive the optimal position for the emergency lamp. Analysis reveals that in designing a center fascia for a car, gender differences should be taken into consideration and that the emergency lamp should be located to the right of the center.
