Objective: Increasing use of mobile devices led users to share digitized data via wireless communication channel in various contexts. This study proposes appropriate signals for critical events during device pairing, and usability test using the interactive prototype of the proposed design. Background: Among various critical events, only the limited event, the initiation process, had been studied. In this study the whole pairing process including association, manipulation, and connected status had been examined, and an appropriate design solution for notifying each event was proposed. Method: Every possible event which could occur during device pairing is identified and critical events which must be notified to users had been selected. Based on the related research, specific design variables in signaling critical events are defined. The proposed signal design was prototyped using physical computing platform ‘Arduino’, which allows to develop an interactive physical prototype. For the usability test, focus group interview were conducted, and participants directly manipulated prototypes and expressed their feeling. Result: We found the advantage of using physical computing platform in usability test, as well as the most preferred pairing signal type. People tended to have more interests on the icon type signals than text type whereas they wanted to confirm their exact state via text. Moreover, 3 times/sec of flickering speed turn out to be the most preferred one. Conclusion: Physical computing platform was found to being useful to identify specific issues for the proposed design and test details for design parameters. Application: The platform able users add emotional values by using familiar characters for output signal or realize their novel ideas. Moreover, since physical prototyping tool is useful to study emotion of users, it is currently being applied in designing interactive systems of product or space.
