The purpose of the study was to analyze the goalkeeper’s movement and defense position for increasing the defense rate during penalty shots in handball. A total of 5 men’s handball matches were captured with 4 digital video cameras from the 94th Korea National Sports Festival with consent from the Korea Handball Federation. The ball’s speed in the penalty shot, release point of the ball, time interval of the ball and total area of goalkeeper’s defense position were analyzed. The results obtained from the analysis are as follows: Firstly, 68% of shots were able to score goals out of 31 total shots of which most of them were scored by throwing low shots and shots from left direction. It is considered that further researches are required on predictability and defensive position during low penalty shots. Secondly, the ball passed with maximum velocity of 95.3km/h in 0.15 second, when the goalkeeper’s average defense position was 3.19m from goal line. Hence, while considering the goalkeeper’s response ability, he/she must try to defense as nearer as possible with respect to the shooter. Furthermore, various training methods for increasing predictability must be added during training session.
