This draft showcases the challenges ergonomists/human factors specialists meet when the discipline was trying to establish its research agenda in South Korea. From its foundation in 1981, ESK faced a strong social recognition that ergonomics/human factors is mainly a secondary means in carrying out the purposes of organizations since its focus was regarded more on the side of the well-being of organization. Therefore, there exist this continuing trend of ergonomic possibilities always underachieved. This happened to many situations that the management of organization and the leadership of R&D typically focus on the performance and outcome of the project ignoring the value of ergonomics/human factors and overall well-being of user. Other than safety, anthropometry and workplace ergonomics, expansion of the discipline to the other design-driven area was difficult and troublesome due to the fact that the technology development tends to be very rapid and dynamic in Korea. Many organizations and research institutions often feel that developing core technologies is much more important than investigating the usability and ergonomics of the technology. Safety and well-being of the user were at most time, regarded as a luxury. Current area of ergonomics/human factors such as usability of product and services and user experiences concerning their use are developed relatively lately in South Korea. Satisfying the usability-oriented goal affects the performance of a product/service. This possibility is presented in the increasing interest in UX(User Experience) among some leading companies of the country. The UX concept recently emerged as the promising lead to potential contribution that user-centered design can provide to the design of product and systems in general.
