A historical appellation of Samhan is used to categorize southern part of Korean peninsula into three regions such as Mahan(馬韓) Jinhan(辰韓) Byŏnhan(弁韓). The period of Samhan was from BC 2nd to AD 3rd century before when these Hans-Mahan Jinhan Byŏnhanreplaced as Baekje, Silla, and Gaya respectively.
However, It engendered dissimilar history awareness from truth of Samhan since 6th century. For example, the history of Samhan has not been regarded as the history of southern part of Korean peninsula but that of the whole peninsula and eastern part of Liao-ho(遼河). Futhermore it is gradually used as the appellation to describe Three Kingdoms: Koguryo, Baekje, and Silla, because the expression of Samhan in China was used for indication of Eastern Barbarians located in eastern part of Liao-ho. The reasons why Chinese historians thought the part of Liao-ho and Korean peninsula as Samhan are that they thought as the related region to Gija Joseon(箕子朝鮮), and the descendant of Gija(箕子) according to its custom handed down Gija’s in their perception of history.
These sort of Chinese history awareness was transmitted to Silla’s historian. According to historical material of Silla, the term of Samhan emerged after the 7th century. Mostly historians in Silla used the term to present its unification and territories they conquered. However there was not one to one correspondence recognition between Samhan and Three kingdoms until the 9th century.
On the other hand, Three kingdoms in Korean peninsula was demonstrated as Samhan by ancient Japan since 8th century. Thus the appellation of Samhan has historicity and universality to present Korean peninsula and other regions through the ancient East Asian history. According to this perspective, I think that Silla used the term of Samhan to emphasis their unified nation with its characteristic.
