This study aimed to analyze the clinical characteristics of patients with disabilities who were hospitalized in Severance Hospital and underwent dental treatment under general anesthesia at a Department of Pediatric Dentistry at Yonsei University Dental Hospital.
A total of 81 cases of general anesthesia from January 2017 to May 2020 were collected for this study. The demographic and clinical factors (sex, age, body weight, American Society of Anesthesiologist [ASA] classification, department of hospitalization and related medical condition, type of treatment, duration of anesthesia and treatment, duration of hospitalization after treatment) of the patients were evaluated. A multivariate linear regression analysis was performed to identify significant factors that could affect the duration of hospitalization after treatment.
Most patients were males (58.0%) and belonged to ASA class II (63.0%) with mean (standard deviation) age and body weight of 7.4 (6.3) years and 19.0 (12.5) kg, respectively. The department in which most patients were admitted was Pediatric Neurology (44.5%), followed by Pediatric neurosurgery (13.7%), and Pediatric Hematology and Oncology (13.7%). The most frequently observed medical conditions for hospitalization were epilepsy (29.7%), followed by cerebral palsy (12.4%), Moyamoya disease (9.9%), and acute lymphoblastic leukemia (4.9%). The most preferred treatment type was crown restoration (4.4 cases per patient). The duration of hospitalization after treatment was predicted to increase if the patient belonged to ASA class III and the patient’s age and body weight increased.
