The Mitsukoshi department store originated from Mitsui Echigoya, a mega shop that was popular in early modern Japan. During this period, commercial organizations underwent modernization and transformed themselves into department stores, which symbolized massive capital. This trend coincided with the unique circumstances of East Asia at the time and helped to spread capital to areas occupied by Imperial Japan. This study examines how the Mitsukoshi department store was created and how it established branch in Keijo, Korea, this nation that was under Japanese rule at the time. In addition, the study looks into the establishment of department store in East Asian countries, as the influx of department stores into East Asia occurred in accordance with the opening of Mitsukoshi’s branches at corresponding locations. This study aims to explore the relationship that the department stores had with the existing commercial entities when they were introduced and the impacts of these stores on the existing cities.
