The goal of vehicular ad hoc networks (VANETs) is to provide safety and comfort to travelers, drivers, and pedestrians during their journeys on the roads. To support vehicular communications under dynamic traffic conditions and diverse operating environments, different communications technologies have been implemented and tested. The availability of Terrestrial Trunked Radio (TETRA) opens a new path for vehicular communications. To explore these opportunities, in this paper, we carry out a performance analysis of TETRA technology on a higher frequency band of 5.4 GHz for vehicular communications. The graph for bit error under the TU-50 and HT-200 standards for the traffic channel (TCH) 7/2 channel is achieved against different targeted data rates. The implementation of TETRA technology supports a high data rate and reliability in vehicular communications for VANETs. The analysis also shows that the VANET role in emergency and disaster situations where limited communications resources are available can be enhanced using TETRA technology, which can provide communications paths for vehicles in VANETs. Moreover, this technology can also provide future support for the usage of a variety of multimedia services in VANETs in the future.
