A fully-deterministic model of an organic Rankine cycle operating in off-design conditions is newly developed by reflecting thermal-hydraulic characteristics obtained through experimental investigation. The effects of several boundary conditions on the system are thoroughly examined by conducting experiments on the 1 kW lab-scale organic Rankine cycle testbed using R245fa as the working fluid. The evaporation and condensation pressures are formed by different processes due to the flow direction and mass distribution priority. The mass balance of the system is realized by modeling the liquid receiver as a passive design. The sub-models of each component are integrated into a multi-stage solver and the developed model is validated within 10% error range compared to the experimental results. The simulation results are compared to the results derived by applying conventional simulation methods to emphasize the importance of the reflection of reality-based logics. The developed model is capable of determining operation failure scenarios and predicting off-design performance even in random operating conditions.
