    In this study, the optimization of the mechanical properties of WC10%–Ni60AA cermet powder coatings fabricated on a 316L stainless steel substrate via laser-directed energy deposition was investigated. Crack-free, low dilution single-track and multi-track coatings were obtained and their mechanical properties, including hardness were characterized. The relationship between the coating geometry (track width, track height, dilution depth, and dilution) and melting parameters (laser power: 750, 900, 1050, and 1200 W; powder feed rate: 3, 3.5, and 4 g/min; hatch spacing: 0.4, 0.5, 0.6, and 0.7 mm) of each coating was thereafter analyzed to determine the optimal combination of parameters required for achieving the desired coating quality. The multitrack coating attained the target track height (250 μm) with no cracks: its hardness was high at ~450 HV. Based on the results of the analysis, the optimal mechanical parameters of each crack-free WC10%–Ni60AA cermet coating deposited on the 316L stainless steel substrate, that would make the coating attain its target quality were determined.
